描述：Prostaglandin E₂ methyl ester is an analog of PGE₂ with enhanced lipid solubility, that has been suggested to play a role in rapid-eye-movement sleep regulation. PGE₂ is the most physiologically abundant eicosanoid, which is produced predominantly from arachidonic acid by COX and PGE₂, and exists at some level in nearly all cell types. PGE₂ acts on four different receptors termed EP₁ through EP₄ yielding an astounding array of biological effects; the use of these prostaglandin analogues is integral for structure-activity studies used in the deconvolution of these complex biochemical pathways.
