DnaJ/Hsp40 proteins are extremely conserved throughout evolution and function as co-chaperones regulating protein folding， transport， translational initiation and gene expression. DnaJC12 has a role in protein folding and export and is believed to be involved in estrogen control and the development of breast cancer. DNAJC12 is expressed at high levels in the brain， heart， and testis， and at reduced levels in the kidney and stomach.
