On Western blots of developing rat brain the antibody reacts with several bands, the most prominent ones at 114,000 and 39,000. On blots of adult rat brain the antibody reacts with a band with molecular weight of 22,000. Blots of adult human brain homogenates indicate reaction similar to the developing rat pattern. SMI 82 visualizes synapse-rich areas of brain and retina in a wide variety of mammalian species. Reaction in adult brain tissue sections from all species examined is primarily with neuronal cell bodies, dendrites and synaptic areas. Axonal staining is faint or absent. In cell cultures, SMI 82 reacts with neuronal cell bodies and dendrites. This IgM antibody reacts with goat antimouse IgG and mouse ClonoPAP¢ç via the light chains common to IgG and IgM. |
