Background Information

There are several colorimetric assays that can analyze the number of viable cells; each is based on the cleavage of tetrazolium salts that are added to the culture medium. These assays do not require either washing or harvesting of cells. The complete assay, from microculture to data analysis, can be performed in the same microplate.

A: Measurement of proliferation. CTLL-2 cells proliferate in response to human interleukin-2 (hIL-2). The amount of proliferation is measured with WST-1.
B: Determination of cytotoxic activity. WST-1 is used to determine the number of viable WEHI-164 cells remaining after treatment with human tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).
