Preparation: Prepared from wood pulp by treatment with alkali and methylation of the alkali cellulose with methyl chloride. Solubility: Soluble in cold water. Insoluble in hot water. An aqueous solution is best prepared by dispersing the granules in hot (but not boiling) water with stirring and chilling to +5oC. The solution is then stable at room temperature. Presence of inorganic salts increases the viscosity. Uses:
