Micromixers using folding flow techniques
Mixing of fluids in microfluidics can be performed in various ways. One way is using micromixers with so-called folding flow techniques. Folding flow micromixers consist of a chain of elements. In each element the flow is folded upon itself, decreasing the length scale for mixing and thus reducing the mixing time. Other advantages of micromixers are the reduction of quantities of fluids involved and stable environmental conditions. The folding flow micromixers are also less sentitive to clogging compared to split an recombine mixers. Micronit offers two types of folding flow Micromixers in the webstore, the Teardrop and Swirl micromixer.
Teardrop Micromixer
The teardrop micromixer has a powderblasted channel pattern equipped with a teardrop mixing structure. This make the teardrop mixer particularly suitable for fast and efficient mixing of fluids with relative low Reynolds numbers. (RE <100). The flow is folded by the splitting and recombining of the channels in the micromixer.
Swirl Micromixer
The Swirl micromixer is for mixing fluids with relatively high Reynolds numbers (RE>50). The powderblasted swirl structure takes care of fast and efficient mixing of the fluids. This is realized by using double swirl chambers that spirals-down the fluid rapidly.
Application Areas of Micromixers
Micromixers are widely used in the analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical industry, biochemical analysis, high-throughput synthesis and the chemical industry.
