Smoothelin是平滑肌骨架蛋白的一个成分，只存在于分化成熟的平滑肌细胞中。类平滑肌细胞如成肌纤维细胞、肌上皮细胞、骨骼肌细胞、心肌细胞等均不含Smoothelin。由于这个特点，抗体Smoothelin在膀胱固有肌层中表达而在粘膜平滑肌中不表达或微弱表达，对于膀胱癌的分期有其重要意义。Smoothelin抗体在用于来源于平滑肌细胞的肿瘤的研究中起一定作用，其免疫组织化学染色在分化成熟的平滑肌肿瘤呈阳性，而低分化的恶性平滑肌瘤，或类平滑肌瘤可能呈阴性。

Smoothelin is a component of smooth muscle scaffold protein that exists only in differentiated mature smooth muscle cells. Smooth muscle cells such as myofibroblasts, myoepithelial cells, skeletal muscle cells, myocardial cells are not Smoothelin. Because of this feature, Smoothelin, an antibody expressed in the lamina propria of the bladder and not expressed or weakly expressed in mucosal smooth muscle, is of great importance for the staging of bladder cancer. Smoothelin antibodies play a role in the study of tumors derived from smooth muscle cells and their immunohistochemical staining is positive for differentiated mature smooth muscle tumors whereas poorly differentiated malignant leiomyoma, or leiomyosarcoma-like tumors may be negative.
